El Esteco Don David Malbec Reserve 2018

Bodega El Esteco was founded in 1892 by David Michel and Gabriela Torino and is located in the Calchaqui Valley, in Argentina’s northwest province of Salta. Calchaqui ValleyThe Calchaqui Valley, located at 5,500 feet above sea level and rising to over 6,600 feet, is known as the world’s highest grape growing region. The vineyards in this valley display some unique characteristics. Poor alluvial soils, high sun exposure, low humidity and the broad variation in heat all contribute to making this terroir deliver highly concentrated wines with accentuated aromas, colours and flavours. David Michel was a pioneer in planting quality vines in these high altitude vineyards, convinced that this remote anddon-david-el-esteco-malbec-reserve-2018-e1591244396420.png exquisite region had the potential to deliver unique wines. With over 1,500 acres of vineyards in the area, Bodega El Esteco’s wines are reflective of their place of origin.

I found this wine at our local Real Canadian liquor store of all places. Originally priced at $17, it was on sale for $12. I bought one with the intention of coming back and buying more if it was any good. Alas, it was stunning and when I went back the next day, the stock was all gone and price was back to $17. But I will keep my eyes open for this wine and hopefully it will be on sale again. If you find this anywhere at a good price, do not hesitate. Buy as much as possible. Summer is coming and it will be the perfect foil for grilled rib eyes.

This is absolutely incredible. The colour is almost an impenetrable purple with intoxicating aromas of black raspberries, black currants, crushed dried berries, cocoa, and grilled meat. On the mid-palate, the wine is extremely full bodied, thick and viscous, with flavours that are an extension of the aromas entwined with plums, chocolate and toasty oak. This wine is perfect with grilled lamb or an inch thick rib eye fresh off the BBQ. Enjoy now or cellar for another 5+ years.

Jim Martin has been involved with the wine and spirits industry for more than four decades. Originally from Vancouver, he started with the provincial BCLDB and discovered a passion for wine in 1977 when he stumbled across a 1975 Bordeaux, which was a revelation to him. This led to delving further into wine appreciation through education, constant tasting and evaluation of the different regions of the world. In 2004, he left the BCLDB for the private sector becoming involved in the opening of Kelowna's first private specialty wine store, Waterfront Wines. He was instrumental in developing an email newsletter while at the LDB and expanding it at Waterfront Wines to include over 3000 people, who receive up-to-date wine news every week.
