Viña Tarapaca Gran Reserve Blend 2017

Viña Tarapacá was founded in 1874, in the heart of the MaiVina Tarapaca Gran Reserve Red Blendpo Valley. Since then, it has crafted elegant, quality wines, becoming one of the most traditional and historical Chilean wineries, as well as a benchmark for viticulture in Chile.

Another new wine that has popped up at our local Real Canadian Superstore wine shop, the 2017 Gran Reserve Blend is an outstanding mix of 36% Syrah, 34% Cabernet Franc, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Carmenere. The wine undergoes 100% malolactic fermentation then is aged for 12 months in French and American oak barrels (20% new and 80% used). The remaining 20% of the wine was kept in stainless steel tanks to retain the primary fruit component in the final blend.

This is an opaque, purple/violet coloured wine loaded with aromas of toasted wood, creamy vanilla, cassis, blackberry, plum, black cherry, roasted meat/dry-rub spices, tar, liquorice, dark chocolate and tobacco leaf. The palate is full of intense flavours of candied black fruit, rich chocolate, soft, velvety acidity and full, chunky tannins leading to an incredibly long, concentrated finish. Sensational with grilled lamb and fresh rosemary. Enjoy now for the sheer intensity of it or cellar over the next 10 years. $16.99

Vinous 90/100 points

“From Isla de Maipo, this blend of mostly Syrah and Cabernet Franc with touches of Carménère and Cabernet Sauvignon was macerated before aging for 12 months. An exotic nose commences with thyme before opening up its pencil box and moving on to flesh and jammy red and dark fruits. Complex and ripe, it presents intense flavors and a slightly rough texture. Juicy in the mouth, ending with a bold, lengthy finish. A wine worth discovering.”

Wine Spectator 89/100 points

“Cast iron notes accent the savory dark fruit and spice flavors, supported by firm acidity and tannins. Baker’s chocolate details and hints of pepper emerge on the steely finish. Syrah, Merlot, Carmenère, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink now through 2023.”

Jim Martin has been involved with the wine and spirits industry for more than four decades. Originally from Vancouver, he started with the provincial BCLDB and discovered a passion for wine in 1977 when he stumbled across a 1975 Bordeaux, which was a revelation to him. This led to delving further into wine appreciation through education, constant tasting and evaluation of the different regions of the world. In 2004, he left the BCLDB for the private sector becoming involved in the opening of Kelowna's first private specialty wine store, Waterfront Wines. He was instrumental in developing an email newsletter while at the LDB and expanding it at Waterfront Wines to include over 3000 people, who receive up-to-date wine news every week.
